Building Habits Against Inattention

Welcome to another episode of the Safer VRS podcast. Today, I am in Fredericksburg, Texas, visiting our friends from Cozy Vacation Rentals. I am checking on a property we're managing and also on the property that my wife Regina and I are building up here. In the previous episode, I discussed inattention and the importance of being aware of it in our daily activities. Today, I want to delve deeper into the four areas of inattention that we discussed last week and also cover how we can create patterns or habits to prevent inattention.

As a reminder, when inattention occurs, we are 95% more likely to be injured or forget a key aspect of our work activity. This is especially important in the vacation rental industry as it relates to the safety of both employees and guests. A large part of preventing injuries begins with each individual, as everything starts with a thought. Our thoughts then lead to emotions, which form our beliefs and drive our decisions. These decisions then lead to actions, and ultimately produce results.

I have identified four golden habits that can help prevent inattention and increase awareness in the workplace. The first habit is to always be aware of potential hazards when you move, such as looking for the light of fire when moving or when something that can cause harm is moving around you. The second habit is to be aware of changes in surface level and look for loss of balance, traction, or grip. The third habit is to always be aware of your surroundings, where your eyes are, is where your attention is. The fourth habit is to remind yourself that you are where your attention is, and to be aware of triggers that may cause inattention.

I firmly believe that I am equipped with everything I need to change my habits and patterns in order to move my attention and prevent inattention. I use "I am" statements to identify and modify my habits. I understand that it takes time and effort to change our habits and patterns but it's worth it for the safety of ourselves and others.
